The Lancaster Bible College Baseball team won their season opener Friday afternoon, hosting Penn St. York in a non-conference bout and winning 12-3. The Chargers improve to 1-0 to start the year while Penn St. York falls to 0-1 overall.
How It Happened: The Chargers found themselves facing a 3-0 deficit after five innings of play. A few errors and some timely hits from the Lions allowed for the early lead.
That was until the Chargers came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring eight total runs. It was a double to left field from freshman
Nick Colarossi that brought in
Harrison Madagan for the Chargers first run of the season. Colarossi then stole third and managed to score on a throwing error to bring the deficit to 3-2 and give the Chargers the spark they needed. Graduate student
Blake Greenly got a double to go through left field, bringing in two more runs and giving the Chargers their first lead of the game, 4-3. Sophomore
Evan Sareyka continued the offensive momentum, sending a single to the left side and scoring Greenly and
Brian Coburn, adding to the scoring outburst. It was none other than Colarossi who rounded out the inning getting a single to drop in left center; his second hit brought in two more runs for an eight-run inning for the Chargers.
Perhaps even more exciting than the eight-run inning was a three-up, three-down series from pitcher
Jacob Stolte and his unorthodox throws that sent his teammates into a frenzy. Capitalizing on the momentum, the Chargers tallied three home runs to finish the game as Colarossi, Coburn, and Greenly all sent one over the fence to give the Chargers a 12-3 win.
From the Coach: The guys showed they've got heart! We started slow but more importantly they fought back. They made in game adjustments that paid off.
It was a team win! A lot of guys had great days, but even the ones who didn't found ways to help us win. Proud of these guys! – Head Coach Ryan MacFarlane
