After splitting a double-header last weekend, Lancaster Bible's baseball team squared off once again against Penn St. Berks and tied in their rematch 15-15. The Chargers move to a 12-5-1 record so far this season with a 4-1-1 standing in the United East. Meanwhile, the Lions go to 3-14-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
Â
How It Happened:Â Things started scary for the Chargers, as the Lions came out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Despite getting one run in the second inning, Penn St. Berks answered with two more. In the third inning,
Blake Greenly hit a massive double that ended up sending two runners home to cut the deficit in half. RBIs from
Shane Stephan and
Josh Hudson in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, made it a 5-6 game with Lancaster Bible still trailing. Meanwhile,
Bryce Schmidt held his own on the mound allowing zero runs, just one hit, and posted three strikeouts.
Â
Stephan singled to get on base and keep some momentum going for the Chargers, and he followed by stealing second and third and getting home on a failed pickoff attempt as the Chargers tied it up at six. However, by the end of the seventh inning, Penn St. Berks had taken an 8-6 lead, leaving some pressure on the Chargers to mount a comeback.
Â
In the eighth inning, Stephan continued his outstanding performance with a triple to get
Brian Coburn home, and
Dylan Witkowski singled to bring home Stephan and tie it at eight. The Lions responded with one run at the bottom of the eighth, leaving Lancaster Bible desperate for at least one run in the final inning. In the face of adversity, the Chargers stepped up big, scoring six runs in the ninth inning, featuring a clutch Witkowski hit to bring two runners home. The Lions fought hard to tally five runs of their own and send it to extra innings.
Â
In the tenth inning, both teams were held to zero, and it was on to the eleventh inning to determine the victor.
Evan Sareyka had a crucial hit that resulted in a run for the Chargers as Witkowski got home, but the Lions got another run to tie it back up. So, after splitting last weekend, both teams ended in a draw with 15 a piece.
