Chargers Collect Two Wins Over Seahawks

The Lancaster Bible College Baseball team played games one and two of their United East Conference series with St. Mary's (Md.) on Friday afternoon at Cooper Park in Millersville, Pa., winning both by scores of 6-5 and 13-4. The Chargers improve to 14-5-1 overall and an impressive 6-1-1 in conference, while the Seahawks drop to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in United East play.

Game 1: 6-5 Win

How it Happened:
After holding the Seahawks scoreless in the first, the Chargers got the bats working right away with three hits. Brian Coburn led off the inning with a double to left center, then Dylan Witkowski laid down a nice bunt single to put runners on the corners. After a failed double-steal attempt Blake Greenly got hit by a pitch, then it was sophomore Evan Sareyka who launched a 3-run home run to give LBC an early 3-0 lead.

St. Mary's (Md.) connected on solo home runs in the third and fifth innings to cut the lead to one, then Lancaster Bible responded in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Hudson reached on an error followed by a Shane Stephan single up the middle, then Coburn hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Hudson to put LBC up two. Later in the inning, Greenly knocked a single to score Stephan and make it a 5-2 advantage for the Chargers.

A string of hits and walks allowed by the Chargers saw the Seahawks fight back in the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Relief pitcher Bronson Coburn held strong in the seventh inning, then the Chargers got the bats going in the bottom of the seventh. Stephan and Coburn had back-to-back singles to start, then Witkowski laid down a sac bunt to move the runners, but a throwing error allowed Stephan to score the winning run and give LBC the 6-5 win in game one.

Game 2: 13-4 Win

How it Happened:
Just like the first game, Brian Coburn led off with a double to left center, then Shane Stephan singled to put two runners on for Blake Greenly, knocking a base hit to right center to score both runs. Later in the inning, Harrison Hobdy drove in two more runs on a single to make it 4-0 after one frame. Good eyes in the second inning led to four total walks, with Evan Sareyka and Hobdy both connecting on two-RBI singles to extend the Charger lead to 9-0.

The Seahawks scored two in the third inning off a home run, then in the fourth inning Owen Shimmel hit a single to left field to drive in the 10th run of the game. After a St. Mary's (Md.) score in the sixth, Malachi Sloane delivered a three-run pinch hit home run to left center, putting the Chargers up 13-3 and helping stick the nail in the coffin on the double-header sweep. Good relief pitching helped the Chargers secure a 13-4 victory for their 14th win of 2024.
