Early Scoring Outburst Helps Baseball Advance in United East Tournament

The Lancaster Bible College Baseball team squared off against the number two-seed Penn St. Abington Lions on Friday afternoon, a team which they had seen five previous times, winning one of those matchups. A 10-run first inning and strong defensive performances helped propel the Chargers to a 16-3 win over the Lions to advance to the winner's bracket on Saturday. The Chargers move to 21-15-1 overall while the Lions drop to 13-25 overall.

How It Happened: It was quite the game from the jump as the Chargers caught early momentum, scoring a total of ten runs in the first inning. The early scoring outburst was highlighted by a two-run double from Harrison Hobdy, a two-run home run from Evan Sareyka, and a base-clearing grand slam from Blake Greenly, which happened to be his 200th career hit.

A 10-0 lead to begin the game, the Chargers locked in defensively as Andrew Workman held the Lions to just eight hits and three runs while striking out three batters. Nehemiah Brubacher and Bryce Schmidt also pitched two key innings, with Brubacher grabbing two strikeouts in three at-bats.

Hobdy homered in the seventh inning, achieving his 100th career hit, while Greenly and Sareyka homered again in the eighth and ninth innings to combine for 13 total runs batted in between the three of them.

By the Numbers: The Chargers tallied 21 total hits for 16 runs and 16 runs batted in… the Lions had eight hits for three runs and three RBIs… Brian Coburn, Dylan Witkowski, and Greenly all had three hits each… Greenly and Sareyka had two home runs each… Hobdy had two hits for four RBIs… Workman earned his third win, holding the Lions to three runs and grabbing three strikeouts… Greenly achieved his 200th career hits milestone while Hobdy and Witkowski eclipsed 100 career hits.

Up Next: The Chargers will play one-seed and #14 nationally ranked Penn St. Harrisburg on Saturday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to play on Sunday and the loser playing at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
