The Lancaster Bible College Men's Basketball team walked away with a 92-88 overtime win over the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks on Saturday evening. The Chargers improve to 11-6 overall and a 6-2 record in the United East while the Seahawks fall to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in conference.
How It Happened: The Chargers got out to a quick 6-0 start beginning with an offensive rebound and putback from
Maureon Tisdale-Couch. Four steals in the first seven minutes of the game helped the Chargers grow their lead to 12-2 at the 12:59 mark. A defensive battle in the first ten minutes, it was an offensive explosion in the final ten minutes of the first half as the Chargers poured in 27 points and the Seahawks had 32 points. With the score tied 32-32 with one minute remaining in the first half, the Chargers finished on a 7-2 run behind a steal and free throws from
Grant Sareyka and five points from
Luke Rumbaugh.
The Seahawks scored a quick four points to start the half to take their first lead of the game, 40-39. The Chargers took the lead twice more before the Seahawks began to create a five point cushion that the Chargers couldn't seem to shrink. That was until another offensive rebound and putback from Tisdale-Couch began their final push bringing the deficit to within five points, 76-71. Tisdale-Couch turned around on the defensive side to nab a steal leading to a three-pointer from Sareyka with 1:59 to go. Sareyka had another jumper within the last minute of the game to keep it a one possession game. The Seahawks went one for two from the free throw line leading to a final opportunity for the Chargers which resulted in a good three-pointer from
Connor Storr at the top of the key to tie the game, 79-79, with 13-seconds left to go. With the Seahawks looking to capitalize on their final possession, it was actually Sareyka who had a game saving block and near game winner from halfcourt as time expired.
Overtime was just as expected with both teams trading buckets, but the Chargers managed to keep just one step ahead in the final minutes. The Seahawks got it within one-point with 17-seconds left but two free-throws from Sareyka and a bigtime steal from
Tyshaun Pulley put the Chargers at the line again as
Camden Hurst made it a two-possession game and the Chargers went on to win 92-88.
