Baseball Clinches Playoffs in DH Split with Wilson

The Lancaster Bible College Baseball team traveled to Chambersburg, Pa. on Saturday afternoon for their final regular season games of the season, splitting their double-header with Wilson as they won game one 4-2 and lost game two 11-10. The Chargers enter postseason play at 18-20 overall and 8-8 in conference while the Phoenix are 8-25 overall and 6-10 in conference.

Game 1: 4-2 Win (10 inn.)

How it Happened:
Junior Dylan Witkowski got the Chargers off to a hot start with a leadoff triple on the first pitch of the game, scoring on a groundout by junior Evan Sareyka to put the Chargers on the board first. The Phoenix answered right back with a run in the bottom frame to tie the score, but Witkowski threw a strike to third base to catch a runner from the outfield to limit the damage. The Chargers struck again in the second inning as they loaded the bases with two hits and a hit batter, with sophomore Nick Colarossi scoring on a passed ball to put LBC back up 2-1. Both teams played solid defense for the next few frames before the Phoenix struck again in the fourth inning with a RBI-single, tying the game at 2-2.

Both teams went scoreless for the next five innings straight, combining great pitching with a lack of offense on both sides to heighten the stakes of the game. Sophomore Shane Stephan blasted a triple in the eighth inning but could not score, then senior Micah Sloane walked and stole second to get in scoring position in the ninth, but also could not come around. Wilson put two runners on in the ninth, but the Chargers held strong to send the game to extra innings tied at two.

The Chargers got a one-out rally going in the tenth inning as freshman Everett Bell and Witkowski each singled to put two on for Stephan, coming through with a base hit to score Bell and put the Chargers back on top 3-2. Two batters later, Witkowski scored on a wild pitch to put LBC up two runs heading into the bottom frame. Wilson loaded the bases with two outs to threaten, but a flyout to Sareyka in center field sealed the extra-inning win for the Chargers.

By the Numbers:
- The Chargers scored four runs on seven hits with two RBI with no errors
- The Phoenix scored two runs on 10 hits with two RBI, committing two errors
- Dylan Witkowski and Shane Stephan each had two hits including a triple each, with Witkowski scoring twice and Stephan knocking in a run
- Evan Sareyka had one RBI and pitched two innings to record the win for the Chargers
- Nick Colarossi and Everett Bell each had a run scored
- The Phoenix were led by starting pitcher Adrian Lugo, throwing all ten innings with 151 total pitches and striking out 13 batters
Game 2: 10-11 Loss

How it Happened:
In a flip of the first game, the bats were popping in game two as 21 total runs came across the plate. Dylan Witkowski scored on an error in the first inning to put the Chargers up again, then Wilson outdid their game-one run total in the first with three runs to take their first lead of the day. LBC got one back in the second as freshman CJ Peterson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Nick Colarossi to cut it to 3-2. Wilson sent seven men to the plate in the second as they used two hits and a Charger error to plate three more runs and grab a 6-2 advantage. The Chargers matched that in the third, getting a RBI-single from Evan Sareyka and a two-run home run from Micah Sloane to bring it back to a one-run game. In the fourth inning, Peterson hit a double to left center and Witkowski singled to bring him in, tying the score at 6-6 after four innings.

The Phoenix retook the lead in the fifth inning 7-6, then the Chargers got the offense going again in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Nate Rosenzweig drew a walk, then Peterson hit his second double of the game to put two runners in scoring position, setting up a Witkowski double that scored them both and vaulted the Chargers on top 8-7. Wilson pulled a similar sequence as a two-run double in the seventh inning put them back on top 9-8, then a sacrifice fly got them to ten runs on the game. Down to the ninth inning, the Chargers were able to load the bases for Rosenzweig, sending single through the left side that scored two runs and brought the Chargers within one. With the bases loaded again, the Chargers could not find the tying run as Wilson secured the one-run victory.

By the Numbers:
- The Chargers plated ten runs on 12 hits with nine RBI, but committed four errors on the game
- The Phoenix had 11 runs on 11 hits with ten RBI, committing three errors
- Dylan Witkowski and CJ Peterson each had three hits, Witkowski finishing with a game-high three RBI and Peterson knocking two doubles
- Micah Sloane and Nate Rosenzweig each had two RBI
- The Phoenix were led by Tyler Smith who had a game-high four hits and three RBI
- Starting pitcher Owen Shimmel took the loss as he pitched seven innings, allowing seven earned runs on ten hits with two strikeouts and three walks

Information to Know:
The Chargers have clinched a spot in the United East Playoffs as their game-one win got them officially in. This was the second extra-inning road game for the Chargers this season as they also went to ten innings with Penn St. Brandywine on March 28, moving them to 2-0 this season in extra-innings. Lancaster Bible is making its fifth consecutive trip to the conference postseason and will either have the six- or seven-seed in the United East tournament as several teams have yet to finish conference play. This is the fourth straight season that the Chargers have finished with at least a .500 record in conference play and back-to-back years at exactly .500, going 8-8 this season and 7-7-1 in 2024.

Up Next:
The Chargers have clinched the postseason but will await their seeding come tomorrow evening, either hosting a First Round game on Tuesday, April 29 or playing on the road in the Second Round next weekend.
