Baseball Takes Two from Gators

The Lancaster Bible College Baseball team hosted Notre Dame (Md.) at Penn Medicine Park in Lancaster, Pa. on Monday afternoon for a United East double-header, taking both games by scores of 17-9 and 6-3. The Chargers improve to 15-13 overall and 5-2 in conference while the Gators fall to 5-18 overall and 1-8 in conference.

Game 1: 17-9 Win

How it Happened:
The Chargers struck first as senior Owen Shimmel knocked a RBI-single to right field for the first run of the game. After the Chargers loaded the bases, sophomore Malachi Sloane blasted a bases-clearing triple to left center to put LBC up 4-0 after just one inning. The Chargers added three more in the second, starting with a RBI-single by junior Evan Sareyka to add on. Then, Shimmel went yard as he knocked a two-run home run to right, extending the early Charger lead to 7-0. The Gators found the scoreboard in the third inning with two runs, but the Chargers doubled that in their frame with a RBI-single by junior Dylan Witkowski and a three-run double by Sareyka to make it 11-2 Chargers.

After a four-run Notre Dame (Md.) fourth inning, the Chargers added another run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nate Rosenzweig, then two runs in the sixth inning off a single by freshman Everett Bell made in a 14-7 ballgame. The Gators scored a run each in the seventh and eight innings, but Lancaster Bible added three in that span including a two-run single by Shimmel, then the Chargers closed out the ninth for a game one victory.

Game 2: 6-3 Win

How it Happened:
The Chargers scored multiple runs in the first inning once again as Evan Sareyka drove in a run on a single and a pair of grounders led to two more Charger runs for a 3-0 lead. The Gators responded with two of their own, stringing together a two-out rally with a few errors to cut the early lead to one. Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the third inning and had a scoreless fourth, then the Chargers got the bats going again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sareyka had another RBI-single to score Dylan Witkowski, then sophomore Nick Colarossi lifted a base hit to left field, scoring Sareyka and extending the lead to 5-2 in favor of the Chargers.

The Gators found another run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to two runs, then some great Notre Dame (Md.) defense kept the Chargers off the board going into the eighth. Needing some insurance, Owen Shimmel came through with a solo home run, his second homer of the day, to put the Chargers up 6-3. Sareyka took the mound in the ninth, catching a hard line drive for the final out as he earned the save and the Chargers completed the conference sweep.
