Chargers Split Monday Action at the Shore

The Lancaster Bible College Softball team had another set of games down in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Monday as they defeated Covenant College (Ga.) 6-3 in game one and fell to Penn St. Beaver 5-4 in game two. The Chargers move to 2-3 overall while the Scots are now 8-10 overall and 2-0 in the CCS and the Lions improve to 2-1 overall.
 
Game 1: 6-3 Win
 
How it Happened:
The Chargers grabbed the lead right away as Ava Stern (Fr.) singled up the middle, scoring Kendall Jackman (Fr.) for the first run. Then, Maddison Atkins (Sr.) knocked a triple to left field, scoring Jackman for a 2-0 LBC lead. The Scots answered right back, loading the bases and plating two runs before Atkins ended the threat on a pair of strikeouts in the circle. Jackman added a double in the 3rd inning, then in the 4th the Chargers went back ahead as KariAnn Mecke (Jr.) drove in a run on a groundout. The defense then came up with a 1-2-3 inning, then Rebekah Hoover (Fr.) came through with a 2-RBI triple to right center, scoring Jackman and Keira Price (So.) to extend the LBC lead to 6-2. The Scots got a run across in the 6th, then the Chargers closed the door in the final inning to seal a three-run victory to improve to 2-0 at the beach.
 
By the Numbers:
- The Chargers had six runs on 11 hits with three errors while the Scots had three runs on five hits and no errors
- Kendall Jackman went 4-4 on the day with a double and a run scored
- Maddison Atkins and Carleigh Cleland (Jr.) each recorded two hits
- Rebekah Hoover and Ava Stern each went 1-4 with two RBI
- Maddison Atkins (W, 2-1) pitched 7.0 innings for a complete game, allowing just five hits for three earned runs with four strikeouts
- The Scots were led by Cassidi Phillips with two hits and one RBI
 Game 2: 4-5 Loss
 
How it Happened:
The Lions drew first blood as they scored a run in the bottom of the 1st on a sacrifice fly, then in the 2nd the Chargers' defense notched a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts by Ava Stern. Carrying their momentum into their hitting end of the 3rd, the Chargers got their bats going, loading the bases for Keira Price, hitting a single to center field to score KariAnn Mecke to get LBC on the board. Then, Rebekah Hoover drew a walk to score Grace Goodman (So.) and give the Chargers the lead at 2-1. Penn St. Beaver had a response in the bottom frame as they plated three total runs to swing back ahead, but Lancaster Bible punched back with two more runs the next frame in the 4th inning. Carleigh Cleland and Mecke each got singles, then after Goodman reached base on an error, Ila Rowatti (So.) lined a RBI-single to center field to get LBC within one. The next batter was Kendall Jackman, grounding out to first to score another run as the game was tied at 4-4 halfway through. The Lions broke through in the 5th inning with a run to take the lead back, with the Chargers unable to get even as they fell by one run to end the day.
 
By the Numbers:
- The Chargers scored four runs on seven hits and four RBI with three errors, while the Lions had five runs on seven hits and four RBI with two errors
- Ila Rowatti had a team-high two hits for the Chargers on 2-3 with one RBI
- Keira Price went 1-4 with a RBI-single
- KariAnn Mecke had one hit on 1-3 with two runs scored
- In the circle, Ava Stern (L, 0-2) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits for just two earned runs and one walk with six strikeouts
- The Lions were led by Jaiden Patterson who went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored
 
Information to Know:
These were the first matchups all-time for the Chargers against both Covenant College (Ga.) and Penn St. Beaver. The Chargers got to .500 on the season with their win over the Scots, their first time at the .500 mark since April 8 of last season when they were 11-11. The Chargers are now 2-1 in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. this week and have four more games on the schedule down at the beach over the next few days.

The Chargers have a day off tomorrow before they resume action in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Wednesday, March 11 as they take on Coast Guard at 9:00 a.m. and Penn St. Scranton at 11:00 a.m.
