It's been more than three years and 39 matches since the Lancaster Bible College men's tennis program began in 2009 and after all that time, the team still did not have a match victory. That fact is now history.
The Chargers won all three doubles matches and hung on after a furious Immaculata rally to win 5-4 and earn the program's first win.
"I couldn't be happier for the guys," Chargers' Head Coach Ethan McNaughton said. "All I can say is, it's about time."
Alex Derus and
Grant Noel won the match of the day at number one doubles when they defeated T.J. Klinger and Demetrios Vlahos, 11-9.
Brandon Cutler and
Alex Ko won their number two doubles match, 8-3, as did the number three doubles team of
Jeremy Davis and
Collin George.
The Mighty Macs didn't fold however and won four of the six singles matches to make would could have been an LBC blowout a tight match.
LBC's
Alex Ko won at number three singles, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6) in one of many matches that went to a tie breaker and only added to McNaughton and the team's nervousness.
Collin George also won for the Chargers, winning his number six singles match, 7-5, 6-3.
"Today is a big deal for the guys and the program," McNaughton said. "They work hard and it's an important they achieve and do well."
The Chargers will look to earn their first-ever winning streak on Tuesday when they battle NEAC foe Penn St. Harrisburg. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
