Chargers Win Game 1, Fall Just Short in Epic Game 2

Lancaster Bible and Gallaudet had just finished a well-played opening game of their doubleheader on Thursday that saw the Chargers pull out a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory. Game two would also be a one-run finish, but in a much different fashion.

Gallaudet jumped out a quick, 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Chargers' starter Micah McClay. LBC responded with their biggest inning of the season, putting up a nine spot on the Bison. The Chargers sent 12 batters to the plate and leadoff hitter, Richard Westerlund, scored twice in the inning that was capped off by Paul Greco's three-run home run.

Rather than packing it in for the day, the Bison responded with nine runs of their own over the next two innings to take an 11-9 lead into the fourth. Gallaudet would make it 14-9, before they finally failed to score a run in the top of the sixth. The LBC bats finally woke up again as they scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 14-13 game. Greco led off the inning with his second home run of the game, while Gallaudet's sixth and seventh errors of the game helped cut the LBC deficit to one heading into the seventh.

The Bison padded their lead in the top half of the seventh on a solo home run by William Bissell and scored once more to increase their lead to 16-13 heading into the bottom of the seventh. And then the fun began.

Westerlund led off the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch, which brought Greco to the plate. The Bison elected to pitch to Greco, despite being 3-for-3 with two homers at that point, and Greco made them pay as he crushed his third home run of the day over the left field wall to cut the Chargers' deficit to one. Greco's three home runs are an LBC record and he now has four this season.

After the Bison brought Chapman into pitch, Frank DiFilippo tied the game with his sixth home run of the season as he deposited another ball into the brush beyond the left field fence.

The next batter, Kody Godsey, doubled down the left field line and was replaced for pinch runner, Ryan Shannon. After a Peter Shue ground out moved Shannon to third, Tim Landis, Jr. was intentionally walked to set up a possible double play. Drew Tilley came to the plate and hit a sharp ground ball to second. Gallaudet's Chris Guinn picked up the ball, tug Landis and threw to first in time to get Tilley, ending the threat and sending the game to extra innings, tied at 16-16.

After both teams failed to do anything in the eight inning (the game's best defensive play happened in the eighth as Shannon made a diving stab at second base), the Bison put two runners on with two outs in the ninth. Austin McKenzie's hit up the middle scored Guinn and gave the Bison a 17-16 lead. In LBC's half of the ninth, Greco drew a walk, which brought DiFilippo up to the plate. DiFilippo hit into a fielder's choice and was replaced at first by pinch runner, Josiah Weaver. After an errant throw by Bison catcher, Casey Hicks, moved Weaver to second, Shannon struck out looking and Shue grounded out to end the game and give the Bison a split of the doubleheader.

The teams combined for 33 runs, 35 hits and eight errors in game two. Seven of the eight errors came from the Bison, but they did manage to have 22 of the 35 hits.

The Bison jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in game one, but LBC battled back due to strong pitching by starter, Westerlund, and clutch hitting. With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Westerlund's bat proved to be the difference as he singled home the winning run, giving LBC the 5-4 victory.

The Chargers (4-14, 2-4 NEAC) return to action on Monday when they will make-up their doubleheader with Valley Forge Christian that was postponed last weekend. Because of another team needing the field on Monday afternoon, the Chargers and Patriots will begin their doubleheader at 10:00 a.m. on Monday morning in Phoenixville, Pa.

Notes:
-The Chargers had just three home runs last season (all by DiFilippo) and have hit 14 already this season.

-Greco has 30 hits already this season and is on pace to break the single season record of 50 set by T.J. Horn.

-LBC is now 9-14-1 all-time against the Bison.

-The Chargers swept a doubleheader, 8-1 and 7-3, from Valley Forge Christian last season.
