Chargers Stay Alive

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team kept its chance of winning an NCCAA Division II World Series title alive on Thursday morning, defeating North Central University (Minn.), 6-0. Chargers' starter, Caleb Mayer, pitched a complete game two-hitter and earned his first victory of the season.

The game was scoreless into the fifth inning, when LBC scored to make it 1-0, which is where the score stayed until the top half of the seventh when the Chargers blew the game open with a five-run inning. Richard Westerlund, Paul Greco and Kody Godsey each had two hits for the Chargers. Greco's two hits give him 52 for the season which is a new LBC record. The previous record was held by now assistant coach T.J. Horn who had 51 during the 2007 season.

"Caleb Mayer pitched an absolute gem today," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Yager said. "We had a couple of mistakes, but we didn't compound them by making more."

One of Greco's two hits was a home run, his 10th of the season, which ties him for the team lead with Frank DiFilippo. Peter Shue had two RBI in the top of the seventh, which brings his season total to 28.

"Greco's homer in the fifth really gave us a boost," Yager said. "I think this was a our best game of the season. We hit well, pitched well and fielded well."

LBC plays again this evening at 6 p.m. They will face the loser of today's winners bracket game between #6 Ohio Christian and #2 Florida Christian. LBC defeated Ohio Christian, 4-3 in the 2010 NCCAA Division II World Series in the only meeting between the two schools. The Chargers have never faced Florida Christian.
