Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible softball team was eliminated from North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff contention on Saturday as the Chargers dropped a doubleheader to Penn St. Abington at Garrett Field in Willow Street, Pa. The Nittany Lions won game one, 5-3 in eight innings and took game two, 10-0 in five innings.
Game one was a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for just five hits over the first six innings before the bats finally woke up. Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Charges tied the game at 2-2 and had runners on second and third with no one out, but couldn't get the winning run across the plate and the game went to extra innings. In the eighth, the Nittany Lions pushed across three runs and though the Chargers got one back and brought the tying run to the plate, couldn't complete the comeback.
Freshman
Kelsey Collins was 2-for-3 at the plate in game one and took the loss on the mound as well despite striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs.
Ally Brown and
Ali Morton each went 1-for-4 with a run scored in game one.
Game two was dominated by Penn St. Abington (20-6, 14-2 NEAC) from the get-go as they scored three times in the first two innings and put the game away in the fourth with five runs. The Chargers didn't record their first hits of the game until the fifth inning when seniors
Kathryn Ritter and
Nicole Valinteno reached base.
Marissa Hardy pitched for the Chargers and struck out two while allowing just four earned runs.
Saturday's games may have been the final games of the season for the Chargers as they cannot make the playoffs in the NEAC or NCCAA, but still have a suspended game with St. Elizabeth that could be played. The Screaming Eagles cannot make the playoffs either however and the game does not technically need to be made up. A decision will be made Sunday or Monday as to whether or not the game will take place. If it does, the game will begin in the bottom of the second inning with St. Elizabeth leading, 1-0.
