The Lancaster Bible men's tennis team opened its season with back-to-back matches on Monday and Tuesday and the Chargers came away with a split as Lancaster Bible lost to Stevenson, 8-1 on Monday in Stevenson, Md., but rebounded to defeat Penn St. Brandywine, 6-3 on Tuesday in Media, Pa.Â
On Monday at Stevenson, freshman
Evan Holbrook earned the lone point for the Chargers as he won his number six singles match over Tony Beres, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. It was Holbrook's first ever collegiate win as the Chargers took on Stevenson for the first time in program history.Â
Fellow freshman
Nathan Amspacher also played well as he lost his number two singles match to James Bishoff, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.Â
On Tuesday, Lancaster Bible won two of the three doubles matches as the number one doubles team of
Alex Derus and Amspacher won, 8-4 and the number two doubles team of
Tedd Holbrook and
Dan Soden also won, 8-4.
Derus picked up his first victory of the season at number one singles as he won the first set, 6-3 and was leading in the second set, 2-1 when his opponent, Max Reichart was forced to forfeit the match due to injury. A day after losing in three sets, Amspacher went the distance again, but this time earned his first collegiate singles win with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Tung Hoang.Â
Tedd Holbrook won his number three singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory, while senior
Justin Bendo won his number five singles match, 6-1, 6-2.
Evan Holbrook just missed winning his second straight match as he lost his number six singles match in a hard-fought three-set battle with T.J. Foldes, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5.
Lancaster Bible returns to action on Saturday when they host Mount Aloysius at 1 p.m. at Linden Hall School in Lititz, Pa.
