Needing a win to secure a North Atlantic Conference West Division playoff berth, the Lancaster Bible men's tennis team came up just short as the Chargers lost to Penn College, 6-3 in a de facto elimination match as the winning Wildcats earned the third and final playoff berth. (The NEAC and NAC have an agreement where the men's NEAC teams play in the NAC and women's NAC teams play in the NEAC.)
The loss drops the Chargers to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. While the team will not make the conference playoffs, many of the players will participate in the singles and doubles events as part of the individual conference tournament.
On Friday, Lancaster Bible's number three doubles team of
Justin Bendo and
Evan Holbrook earned the lone doubles win for the Chargers as they defeated Rommel Cressman and Matt Kulp, 8-3. The number one doubles team of
Alex Derus and
Nathan Amspacher lost a tough match, 8-6 during doubles.Â
Evan Holbrook finished the day 2-0 as he won his number six singles match, 8-2 over Kulp, while senior
Dan Soden picked up the other Lancaster Bible point as he won his number four singles match, 6-3, 6-4 over Seth Strickland.Â
Bendo lost a heartbreaker at number five singles as he fell, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Junior
Tedd Holbrook played well in a 6-4, 7-5 loss as well.
Lancaster Bible will return to the court on Sunday when they host Mount Aloysius at 2 p.m. The match is scheduled to take place at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa.Â
