The Lancaster Bible College men's tennis team concluded its 2017 season on Friday at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships in Clarks Summit, Pa. Though the Chargers did not make the team portion of the tournament, several players earned berths in the individual portion of the tournament.
Senior
Jared Steiner, playing the flight two singles tournament as the number three seed, lost his opening match to second-seeded Ryan Fritz from Penn St. Berks, 6-1, 6-4, but rebounded to defeat Ethan Rosler from Penn College, 8-1 in the consolation match to take home third place.
Sophomore
Jason Steiner played in the flight three singles tournament and was also the third seed, but he upset second-seeded Tarik Dashields from Penn St. Abington, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in a terrific match. Steiner moved on to face Diego Olazagasti from Penn St. Berks in the championship match, but Steiner fell to the top-seeded Olazagasti, 6-1, 6-1. Despite the loss, Steiner earned NEAC All-Conference Second Team honors after finishing second.
Junior
Evan Holbrook played in the flight four singles tournament as the second seed and advanced to the championship match by defeating Penn College's Andrew Francisco, 6-1, 6-2. Holbrook then faced Penn St. Abington's JT Kling in the championship match and Kling came away victorious, 6-0, 6-0. Like
Jason Steiner though, Holbrook was rewarded for his championship match appearance by earning NEAC All-Conference Second Team honors.
Senior
Cody Rupp took part in the flight five tournament as the third seed and lost his opening match to Prerak Patel of Penn St. Abington, 6-3, 6-3. Rupp rebounded though and won his consolation match, 8-2, over Vojtech Luza of Bryn Athyn.
Senior
Caleb Onasch wrapped up the singles portion for the Chargers as he played in the flight six tournament. Onasch, the third seed, lost his first match to second-seeded Ilker Erkut of Penn St. Abington, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. Onasch, like his teammates, recovered from the tough loss by defeating Stephen Helminiak, 8-0 in the flight's consolation match.
Jared Steiner and Holbrook took part in the flight two doubles tournament and dropped their opening match as the third seed, 8-3, but battled back to win their consolation match, 8-1 over the team from Penn College.
Jason Steiner and
Keven Vallette lost their match in the flight three doubles tournament, 8-3 to the team from Penn St. Abington and because their was not a fourth team in the flight three doubles tournament, Steiner and Vallette did not play a consolation match.
Prior to the individual tournament, Penn St. Berks defeated Penn St. Abington in the NEAC Team Finals to claim the team championship.
