Chargers Split Tennis Doubleheader

The Lancaster Bible College men's tennis team played a rare North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, as the Chargers defeated St. Elizabeth at Hempfield Rec Center, before losing to Penn St. Abington in Reading, Pa. later in the day. The Chargers defeated the Eagles, 9-0 in the opener, and lost to the Nittany Lions, 8-1. The Chargers are now 2-6 overall and 2-2 in NEAC play.

The Chargers cruised to their first shutout victory of the season, as the number one doubles team of Luke Newberry and Derice Butler won, 8-3, followed by 8-1 victories by both Evan Holbrook / Ming Bowser, and Keven Vallette / James Hutchinson. 

After sweeping the doubles matches, Newberry blanked his opponent at flight one singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Bowser won, 6-4, 6-0 at number two singles. Holbrook was victorious, 6-3, 6-1 at number three singles, and Butler won, 6-1, 6-1 in flight four singles.

Vallette was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number five singles, while Hutchinson won, 6-0, 6-1 in flight six singles. 

This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Lancaster Bible earned its lone point in the second match of the day at number three doubles, where Vallette and Hutchinson teamed up to defeated Andrew Mandujano and Alex Sphabmixay, 8-4. Newberry and Butler lost, 8-3 in flight one doubles, while Holbrook and Bowser dropped their match, 8-4 at number two doubles.

Newberry lost at flight one singles, 6-3, 6-2 to Micheal Litz, while Bowser dropped his flight two singles match, 6-1, 6-0. Holbrook and Butler dropped their matches in two sets at three and four singles, while Vallette and Hutchinson also lost their singles matches.

Lancaster Bible is now 0-8 all-time against Penn St. Abington. The Chargers are still likely to make the NEAC Playoffs despite the loss to Penn St. Abington, as the top four teams qualify for the NEAC postseason. 

The Chargers return to the court on Tuesday when they face Rosemont in Rosemont, Pa. at 4 p.m.
