Chargers Wrap-Up 2018 at NEAC Championships

The Lancaster Bible College men's tennis team wrapped up its 2018 season this weekend at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championships in Clarks Summit, Pa. The Chargers lost to Penn St. Berks, 5-0 in the NEAC Semifinals on Friday night, but rebounded to play well in the individual portion of the championships.

On Friday night, the Chargers dropped all three doubles matches to the Nittany Lions, as the flight one team of Luke Newberry and Derice Butler lost, 8-0, while the number two team of Ming Bowser and Evan Holbrook fell, 8-1. The flight three team of Keven Vallette and James Hutchinson played very well in their match, but ultimately lost, 9-8 (7-1). Needing just two singles victories to win the match, the Nittany Lions earned wins at number two singles and number four singles to wrap-up the match.

In doubles action on Saturday as part of the individual portion of the tournament, the flight two team of Bowser and Holbrook lost a tough match to the top-seeded team from Penn College, 8-5, and then lost in the consolation match to the team from Penn St. Abington. The number three team of Vallette and Hutchinson also lost a tough match in their opening round, as they fell to the team from Penn College, 9-7. The pair then dropped an 8-6 decision to the team from Penn St. Abington in the consolation match.

In singles play, Newberry, the third seed, lost in three sets in the semifinals to Will Byler from Penn St. Berks, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, but rebounded to win his consolation match, 8-3 over an opponent from Bryn Athyn. In flight two, Bowser won his semifinal match, 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 over an opponent from Penn St. Abington, but lost in the final to Diego Olazagasti from Penn St. Berks, 6-0, 6-0. 

Holbrook lost his flight three semifinal match, 6-2, 6-1, but fought hard and won his consolation match, 8-4 over an opponent from Penn St. Abington. Butler lost his opening match of the flight four tournament, and then fell in the consolation match as well, 8-0 to an opponent from Penn St. Abington.

Vallette dropped his opening match in the flight five tournament, but rebounded to defeat Joseph Morrin from Penn College, 8-5 to earn the consolation match victory. Hutchinson produced the same result at flight six, as he dropped his semifinal match, but earned an 8-5 victory in the consolation match over an opponent from Penn St. Abington. 

Lancaster Bible finished 4-8 overall this season, as Newberry led the way in his first season with the team, as he collected a 10-3 record in singles play. Senior Evan Holbrook capped his career this weekend, finishing with 16 career singles victories.
