Accolades Galore for the Chargers

The North Eastern Athletic Conference announced its selections for the NEAC All-Conference Field Hockey Team on Wednesday afternoon, and four Lancaster Bible College student-athletes, and Head Coach Becky Elliott earned recognition.

Lancaster Bible freshman Macy Balmer was named NEAC Rookie of the Year, as well as to the NEAC All-Conference First Team, and she was joined on the First Team by Blessing Bowman (M), Corryn Wolgemuth (D), and Chloe Campbell (GK). In addition to the four players, Lancaster Bible Head Coach Becky Elliott was named NEAC Coach of the Year, as the Chargers improved by three wins, and increased their goal total by 600 percent.

Balmer, a freshman, has been one of Lancaster Bible's biggest offensive threats this season, as she leads the team with six goals, five assists and 17 points. Balmer's ability to control the ball in the midfield greatly enhanced the Chargers' play in the middle third of the field, and she also added the game-winning goal in a victory over Wells on Oct. 5. Balmer's play extended to the defensive side of the field as well, as she was the flyer on defensive corners for the Chargers.

Bowman, who was named to the NEAC All-Conference First Team last season as well, was a steady force in the midfield once again for the Chargers this season. Bowman has two goals and three assists this season for seven points, as she scored both goals in a 5-1 victory over Bryn Athyn on Oct. 3 at the Donald H. Funk Field.

Wolgemuth, a senior, has been the best defender on the Chargers this season, as she has helped lead a defensive unit that features several first-time field hockey players. Wolgemuth has not only been strong on the defensive side of the field, but has helped the Chargers improve their offensive penalty corner tries this season, as she has been inserting the ball. Wolgemuth has a goal and two assists this season, as she scored her first-ever collegiate goal on Oct. 23 against Cedar Crest.

Campbell, a sophomore playing her first-ever season of field hockey, joined the team in late August, and has been impressive from her first game. She has started every game this season, and helped the Chargers trim their goals against average by two full goals. Campbell has recorded one shutout and three wins this season, and was named Player of the Week in the Colonial States Athletic Conference earlier this season, as the Chargers are dual members of the CSAC and NEAC for field hockey. Campbell has made double-digit saves on four different occasions this season, including a season-high 17 against Moravian on Sept. 24.

Elliott is in her second season as the head coach of the Chargers, and she, along with assistant coach Sarah Linn and Megan Barben, have helped the Chargers improve immensely from season one to season two. The Chargers posted the program's first win since 1984 on Sept. 6, and in addition to winning three games this season, five of Lancaster Bible's 14 losses have come by two goals or less. A season after scoring just twice in 13 games, the Chargers have 22 goals in 17 games, and thanks to both the players and coaches, have built a foundation for success in the coming years.

Lancaster Bible will wrap-up its season tonight at 7 p.m. at Keystone.
