Lancaster Bible Picks Up First Win of 2019

The Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday night at Horst Athletic Center, as the Chargers defeated Wilkes, 3-1. Lancaster Bible won, 24-26, 25-18, 25-13, 25-14, and improved to 1-4 this season, while the Colonels dropped to 2-3.

How it Happened: After a back-and-forth opening set, the Chargers were on the verge of winning, as they led 22-20, but Wilkes fought back and won four of the final six points of the set, including the final on a kill from Karlye Huffman, and took the set, 26-24, stunning a loud Horst Athletic Center crowd.

Lancaster Bible put the opening set behind them quickly and raced out to a 10-5 advantage thanks to aces from Allison Shuey and Kate Smoker. The Colonels hung around again, and trailed just 16-14, but Lancaster Bible took four of five points, all coming on kills, and took a 20-15 lead on a kill from senior Courtney Goyak. The Chargers closed out the set on a kill from Bekah Roberts, followed by a Wilkes error, and evened the match.

The Chargers dominated the third and fourth sets, as the Chargers won 10 of 11 points midway through the third set for an 18-8 lead, and eventually won the third frame on an ace from Cassidy King. King then served to open the fourth set, and helped the Chargers to a 7-0 lead, and Lancaster Bible eventually led, 14-2 and cruised to a 25-14 victory.

Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible had 55 kills and 26 errors on 144 attacks for a .201 hitting percentage, while Wilkes had 23 kills and 20 errors on 121 attacks for a .025 hitting percentage…The Chargers also led in digs 65-54, and aces 7-3…Wilkes led in blocks, 8-3…Smoker finished with 16 kills and 15 digs, while King had 11 kills and 10 digs to go with three aces…Goyak also added 11 kills, while Heyworth had 10 kills and 13 digs…Shuey finished with 48 assists, eight digs and two aces…Roberts played well with seven kills and zero errors on 12 attempts…Jamey Mikovich led the Colonels with 10 kills.

The Coach Says: "We were certainly a little antsy in the first set, but turned things around in the second set, and played well in the third and fourth sets," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Micah Herron said. "I thought Allison [Shuey] helped change the tempo for us, and we got good matches from Kate [Smoker] and Cassidy [King]. Tonight gives us some good momentum heading into the weekend with tough matches against Hood and Eastern Mennonite."
