The Lancaster Bible College baseball team opens its 2021 season on Saturday, as the Chargers welcome Wells to Charger Field. The game represents so many things for the Chargers, including the opening of a 20-game North Eastern Athletic Conference campaign, the program's first game in 379 days, and the team's first home contest in 699 days.
Â
The Chargers went 2-7 last season before the COVID-19 Pandemic ended the year, and since that time the team has varied between independent practices, team practices, and intra-squad scrimmages. That all changes on Saturday when the first pitch of the 2021 season is thrown just after 1 p.m. Lancaster Bible's team looks different from not only the last full season in 2019, but also last year's shortened season.
Â
Sixteen of the 27 players on this year's team are either freshmen or sophomores, including nine freshmen. Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Frank DiFilippo has done a terrific job recruiting student-athletes to the program, now all they need is experience on the field. The remaining 11 members of the junior and senior classes have some of that on-field experience, and are still driven by the end of the 2019 season when the Chargers missed the conference playoffs by one game.
Â
Between the underclassmen hungry for a chance to play collegiate baseball and the upperclassmen ready to avenge 2019's disappointing end, the Chargers are ready as ever for the 2021 campaign. The team will sprint through a 20-game NEAC season, as six of the seven teams in the conference for baseball are competing, with Gallaudet being the only team sitting out the year. The Chargers will play each of the five other teams four times, as Lancaster Bible will host 10 games and take to the road for 10 games.
