Game Recap: Baseball |

Chargers Split Pair of One-Run Games with Penn College

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team earned a key doubleheader split with Penn College on Saturday in Williamsport, Pa., as the Chargers took game one, 1-0 behind a terrific pitching performance from Trevor High, but lost game two, 4-3. The Chargers and Wildcats are both 7-9 overall and 7-9 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play this season.

Game 1
Lancaster Bible 1, Penn College 0
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible loaded the bases in the top of the first, but couldn't bring any runs around to take an early lead. The Chargers did cash in during the top of the third, as Ethan Varricchione reached base via an error with two outs. He then stole second and scored on Jaden Pinkney's single to put the Chargers ahead 1-0.

Penn College put a runner on in the bottom of the inning thanks to their only hit of game one, but High recorded the next two outs to get out of trouble. Neither team could do much offensively the rest of the way, though the Chargers did have a chance to extend the lead in the seventh when Kaden Hunt doubled and moved to third on a groundout, but couldn't come around to score, as the Chargers ended the inning with a fly out.

The bottom of the seventh looked like lots of the others, as High retired the Wildcats in order to secure the victory.

Inside the Box Score: Hunt finished 2-for-4 in game one, while Pinkney and Brian Coburn also had hits for the Chargers…High pitched a complete game for the fourth time this season, as he improved to 3-3 this year…High faced just one batter over the minimum, and struck out three, while walking just one.

Game 2
Penn College 4, Lancaster Bible 3
How it Happened: After being shut down for seven innings in game one, Penn College scored twice in the first inning of game two thanks to a two-run home run, and tacked on another run in the second to make it 3-0.

The Chargers left two runners on base in the fourth, and Penn College capitalized on Lancaster Bible's inability to bring runs around in the sixth, as Penn College made it 4-0 thanks to another home run.

Lancaster Bible wouldn't go quietly in game two however, as Varricchione doubled with one out in the ninth inning, and after another out, Blake Greenly walked to put runners on first and second. Freshman Adam Naylor doubled to right field to bring home Varricchione and put runners on second and third. Jake Hahn hit an a two-run single to score Greenly and Naylor, and the Chargers were within one with the tying run on second, after Hahn got there thanks to an error by the right fielder. Andrew Kidder pinch ran for Hahn, but would be stranded there, as the Chargers fell, 4-3.

Inside the Box Score: Hunt was 2-for-4 for the second straight game, while Hahn was 2-for-4 with two RBI…Naylor, Varricchione, and Coburn also had hits for the Chargers…Greenly reached base twice, and scored a run…Coburn took the loss, but pitched well, as he scattered seven hits over six innings, and allowed three earned runs, while striking out three…Zach Clemens pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and didn't allow a hit.

News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 4-12 all-time against Penn College…The Wildcats took three of four games from the Chargers this season…Lancaster Bible is 1-3 in one-run games this season…The game one shutout was the third shutout of the season for the Chargers…Varricchione continues to lead the team with a .439 batting average, while Greenly, Saufley, and Hunt are all batting over .340…Of Varricchione's 25 hits, 11 of them are for extra bases…All three of High's victories are shutout wins this season, and through 32 2/3 innings his earned run average is 1.93.
