Doubleheader Split Keeps Chargers in Playoff Hunt

Box Score 1 The Lancaster Bible College softball split a doubleheader with Penn St. Abington on Tuesday in Abington, Pa., as the Chargers kept their North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff hopes alive by winning game one, 7-5, and then dropping game two, 7-0. Game two was ruled a forfeit, as the Chargers only traveled with nine players on Tuesday, and following an injury to one of the Chargers, Lancaster Bible was forced to forfeit in the bottom of the fourth, when the team trailed, 8-2.
 
Lancaster Bible is now 5-11 overall and 5-11 in NEAC play this season, while the Nittany Lions sit at 5-9 overall and 5-7 in NEAC action.
 
Game 1
Lancaster Bible 7, Penn St. Abington 5
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible scored three times in the top of the first, as the Chargers had just one hit, but took advantage of three Penn St. Abington errors. Hannah Lieb, Phoebe Clemens, and Nicole DeKok all scored in the inning, while DeKok had the lone hit, an RBI single to center field.
 
Penn St. Abington scored a run in the second and a run in the fourth to make it 3-2 in favor of the Chargers, but Lancaster Bible erupted for four runs and three hits with two outs in the top of the fifth to grab a 7-2 lead. Lieb highlighted the inning with an inside-the-park home run, while DeKok added another RBI single, as she drove in Clemens and Adalyn Steiner. Chloe King reached on an error later in the inning, and DeKok crossed the plate to give the Chargers a 7-2 lead.
 
The Nittany Lions made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as they scored three times and brought the tying run to the plate After making it 7-5 on an RBI single, another run was caught trying to score and Chloe King tug her out heading towards home plate.
 
Inside the Box Score: DeKok was 3-for-4 in game one with three RBI and two runs scored…She also pitched seven innings and earned her fifth win of the year, as she scattered eight hits and struck out four..Lieb was 2-for-4 with two runs, while Steiner was 2-for-3 with a run scored…Sonja Nelson had an RBI, and Clemens scored twice.
 
Game 2
Penn St. Abington 7, Lancaster Bible 0
How it Happened: Penn St. Abington jumped on the Chargers in game two, as the host Nittany Lions scored four times in the first inning. Penn St. Abington was leading 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth, when two Lancaster Bible players collided. One of the players was forced to exit the game, and the Chargers, playing with a roster of nine, were forced to forfeit.
 
News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 6-16 all-time against Penn St. Abington…Both DeKok and Clemens are batting over .425 this season, as DeKok leads the team at .429, and also has a team-best 21 hits…Clemens leads the team with 18 runs scored.
