Lancaster, Pa. - The Lancaster Bible College Men's and Women's Track & Field teams competed in the Mini-Dip Invitational hosted by Franklin & Marshall College on Friday, January 28. More than 13 schools competed at the meet, with hundreds of student athletes participating. The Chargers had nine top-10 finishers, led by Leah Bergey and Trey Baughman who took second in the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump. The Chargers saw improvement across the board, setting six school records along the way.
Out of the Blocks
Leah Bergey had another strong showing in the 60-meter hurdles taking second overall in the event. Bergey's best time in the event came in the prelims, where she recorded a time of 9.44. With this mark, Bergey reset the school record and is tied for sixth in the NCCAA Rankings. In the 60 meters, Hannah Lieb improved upon her school record, running the race in a time of 8.83.
LBC also had a strong showing in the 400 meters. Nick Songster finished seventh overall in a time of 54.98. Songster set a school record in the event. In the women's race, Kara Huber took eighth, setting a school record with a time of 1:06.71.
The Chargers had a pair of firsts at the meet. Dana Keller became the first LBC athlete to compete in the 500 meters, finishing in a time of 1:44.01. Meanwhile, Kenneth Hott was the first Charger to take part in the 300 meters, posting a time of 46.19.
In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the team of Adam Horning, Trey Baughman, Jonathan Collins and Songster took seventh, finishing in a time of 3:45.55. The women's 4x400 meter relay team made of Jurnee Acosta, Erin Wilsey, Huber and Lieb took ninth finishing in a time of 4:51.29.
At the Pits
The Chargers were once again impressive in the high jump. Trey Baughman took second in the men's event, clearing the bar at a height of 1.95 meters. In the women's high jump, Leah Bergey took fifth place with leap of 1.45 meters. Hannah Lieb had a strong showing, recording a personal best by clearing 1.40 meters.
In the men's long jump, Logan Burkholder finished ninth leaping 5.98 meters.
Historical Note
For the first time in school history, the men's and women's track & field teams were ranked in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings. The men's team is ranked 13th with 58.38 points. The women's team checks in at 16th with a point total of 47.06.
Coaching Points
"I was really proud of our effort today especially in the middle and long distances" said head coach Melissa Baughman. "Each of those athletes made major strides today, shaving seconds off their times. It's great seeing their improvement and I am looking forward to what the team can do in our final meet before the NCCAA Championships."
