Bergey Wins NCCAA National Championship; Herb Earns All-American Honors

Greenville, IL - The Lancaster Bible College men's and women's Track & Field teams concluded competition at the NCCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships hosted by Greenville University. LBC crowned its first ever NCCAA National Champion, with Leah Bergey winning the 100-meter hurdles. Elijah Herb also earned All-American status in the 110-meter hurdles. The men's team finished 15th at the championships with a team score of 13 and the women's team placed 8th with a team score of 29.50.

Leah Bergey was poised to win the program's first ever championship after posting a blazing fast time of 14.56 in her qualifying heat. Bergey once again got off to a great start, pulling away from the field to win the event with a time of 14.58. Bergey's day was not done as she would again shine, this time in the 400-meter hurdles. She posted a career-best time of 1:05.13, finishing second and earning NCCAA All-American honors.

Elijah Herb earned NCCAA All-American status in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing second in the event, bettering his qualifying heat time by recording a time of 15.61. Last season, Herb took fourth in the event, just missing out on earning an All-American honor.

LBC had its first two athletes compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NCCAA Championships. In the women's event, Emma Fertig finished 10th overall, finishing in a time of 13:05.73. Josiah McClymont took ninth in the event, finishing in a time of 10:37.23.

Kara Huber finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at a height of 2.90 meters.

In the women's 4x100 meter relay race, the team of Elizabeth Lieb, Sydney Heller, Emma Fertig and Kara Huber took seventh with a time 52.24. LBC took 10th in the men's 4x100 meter relay with the team of Richard Hartigan, Logan Burkholder, Josiah McClymont and Adam Horning finishing the race in a time of 43.72. The Chargers went on to finish 10th in the men's 4x400 meter relay and sixth in the women's 4x400 meter relay.

"This is a historic day for LBC track and field with Leah's national championship performance, our program's first," said head coach Melissa Baughman. "I am so happy for her as I have watched her consistently put the work in!  And adding Elijah to our All-American list is exciting! But our team has worked so hard this year on skills and being great teammates. I love the direction of our program."
