Chargers Drop Both to Raiders

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team wrapped up their week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Thursday, March 9th losing to the Raiders 2-3 then 5-10. The Chargers fell to 2-7 overall to start the 2023 season while the Raiders score their first two wins of the season sitting at 2-4 overall.
 
Game One: Chargers 2, Raiders 3
 
The Chargers were the first to put runs on the board, scoring two in the 2nd inning. It began with a Zane Cook walk then an Adam Naylor double to left field, sending Cook to third. A passed ball sent Cook home and Naylor to third base. Andrew Kidder stepped up to the plate, hitting a single to center field and sending Naylor home to put two runs on the board.
 
Despite the offensive surge, the Raiders responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning and then both teams went scoreless through the sixth inning. Heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, the Chargers held a 2-1 lead until a sacrifice fly to center field and a throwing error sent two runs in for the Raiders giving them the walk-off win.
 
By the Numbers
  • The Chargers had six hits and three walks on the game.
  • Dylan Witkowski, Naylor, and Kidder all went 2-3 on the night with Kidder having the lone RBI.
  • Witkowski had three stolen bases.
  • Colin Brubaker suffered the loss on the mound, but had a career day, allowing only four hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters.


Game Two: Chargers 5, Raiders 10
 
The Chargers scored the first four runs of the game with one run in the first and three runs in the third, with senior Blake Greenly scoring twice, Witkowski scoring, and Coburn scoring. The Raiders managed to score three in the fourth to bring the deficit to within one run. A Witkowski double sent Thade Hague in to score a run in the fourth and put the Charger score to five runs.
 
Holding a 5-3 lead in the fourth, the Chargers suffered a breakdown in the top of the fifth, giving up seven runs as the Raiders took a 10-5 lead on just four hits. The Raiders went on to win 10-5 and give the Chargers their seventh loss of the season.
 
By the Numbers
  • Witkowski, Greenly, and Coburn all had two hits each including a Greenly triple.
  • Coburn, Witkowski, and Naylor all had an RBI each.
  • Freshman Jack Nance had a double earning two RBI's.
  • James Toney suffered the loss on the mound. Andrew Workman pitched four innings giving up only two hits, walking six, and striking out five batters.
  • Matthew Shaeffer closed the last three innings, only giving up one run and striking out five batters.  
Up Next: The Chargers will head back to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Neumann at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, March 15th.
