Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Hunter Gerber

Women’s Volleyball Picks Up Home Opener Win

The Lancaster Bible College Women's Volleyball team took advantage of home court as they earned a 3-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Thursday night in their 2023 home opener. The Chargers improve to an even 3-3 overall on the year while the Griffins drop to 2-3 overall.

How It Happened: It was a battle from the start as the Chargers and Griffins traded points for much of the first set. Jessica Fletcher opened up the game with a strong kill to hype the crowd before the Griffins responded with a point of their own, a theme that would be for the rest of the night. The lead grew to no more than four points as the Griffins led the Chargers 9-5 at one point. Finding themselves down 18 to 19, the Chargers battled back to earn a 25-23 win as freshman Tessa Kwiatkowski had a service ace followed by a strong kill from Faith Hammond to win the first set.

Looking to carry the momentum into the second set, it was the Griffins who jumped ahead to a 5-3 lead. However, the Chargers put together several key runs, including a 9-2 run in the middle of the set to take the lead 19-12. Kills from Hammond and Fletcher sealed the second set, 25-16.

Again, the Chargers and Griffins started neck and neck before a 6-0 run gave the Chargers a 14-6 lead thanks to two aces from Madison Timberlake and a kill from Chloe King. From there, the Chargers raced to a quick 25-14 win, sealed again by a Hammond kill.

By the Numbers: The Chargers won the kills battle 35-20… the Chargers tallied eight aces, 31 assists, and 45 digs for the game… the Griffins edged out the Chargers in blocks 6-3… Riley Dodrer had a game-high eight kills while Chloe King and Hammond had seven each… Leah Helman had 17 digs and three service aces… Kwiatkowski dished out 18 assists… Kate Etter had six kills for the Griffins.

Up Next: The Chargers stay at home for a tri-match against York (Pa.) and Saint Elizabeth at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16.
