The Lancaster Bible College Men's Basketball team had their home opener on Wednesday night hosting the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen. The Dutchmen erased a 15-point Chargers lead to send the game into overtime as the visitors took home the win, 87-84. The Chargers move to 0-2 to start the season while the Dutchmen improve to 2-0 overall.
How It Happened: Spirits were high, and the gym was loud as the Chargers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead off two steals and layups from
Camden Hurst,
Maureon Tisdale-Couch, and a three-pointer from
Grant Sareyka. The Dutchmen didn't get their first bucket until 17:35 in the first half. The Chargers managed to keep the lead at double-digits as a dunk from
Luke Rumbaugh pushed it to 40-27 with just under five minutes left in the half. A layup from
Connor Storr at 2:34 left in the half brought the lead to 15-points, the largest of the game. A 4-0 run from the Dutchmen to end the half brought the deficit to 46-35 at half.
It was several early points in the paint for the Dutchmen that brought the deficit down to just five points three minutes into the second half. The Chargers pushed it again to a double-digit lead as freshman
Isaac Smalls hit a jumper to make it a 13-point lead with 14:12 remaining. But it was the Dutchmen who managed to stick around bringing their deficit to just one point, 72-71, at 2:19 left. A free throw from
Tyshaun Pulley made it 73-71 at 1:51, but the Dutchmen scored a layup off an offensive rebound with just :39 seconds left. Neither team was able to convert on opportunities to win the game.
Overtime kept the same pace with the back and forth play. The Dutchmen took an early two point lead, but the Chargers tied it quickly with a layup of their own. With just 50 seconds left the Chargers faced a seven point deficit. It was Sareyka though that came alive, knocking in back-to-back three pointers to bring the game to 85-84. Despite an opportunity to take a lead, the Dutchmen scored two free throws at three seconds left and went on to win 87-84.
By the Numbers: The Chargers shot 47-percent from the floor, 34-percent from three, and 69-percent from the charity stripe… the Dutchmen went 49-percent from the floor, 22-percent from three, and 73-percent from the free throw line… the Chargers had 30 points off the Dutchmen's 24 turnovers… Sareyka had a team-high 18 points, Tisdale-Couch added 12 points on 6-8 shooting, and Hurst added 10 points and eight assists… Ryan Harder scored a game-high 19 points.
