The Lancaster Bible College Men's Basketball team traveled to Reading, Pa. on Saturday afternoon for a United East Conference contest with the Penn St. Berks Lions falling 86-85. The Chargers fall to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Lions get their first win to improve to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in conference.
How It Happened: It was a battle from the start as the Chargers found themselves in a 5-0 deficit, but
Connor Storr put the first points for the Chargers on the board. The Chargers couldn't take their first lead of the game until the 10:22 mark after a three-pointer from
Camden Hurst. The two squads continued to trade baskets and the lead for the remainder of the half until a layup from
Reaves Hooks put the Chargers up five points with 1:49 to go. The Chargers headed to halftime with a 41-40 lead.
Coming out of the second half the Lions were able to reclaim the lead 47-46 early on. They would go up five on two separate occasions until a tip-in from
Isaac Smalls gave the Chargers their first lead of the half 64-63. A steal and layup from Hurst at the 5:33 mark gave the Chargers their biggest lead of the game 74-68 to capitalize a 7-0 run but it was short-lived as Lions clawed back to tie the game just three minutes later.
The Lions went up 84-82 with 42-seconds left to play but Hurst again gave the Chargers a 85-84 lead after converting an and-one. Two free throws from the Lions however put them up one point, 86-85, with just nine seconds left. The Chargers last second chance fell short as the Lions went on the win.
By the Numbers: The Chargers shot 48-percent from the field, 25-percent from three, and 62-percent from the free throw line… the Lions shot 53-percent from the field, 47-percent from three, and 68-percent from the line… the Chargers had 50 points in the paint but turned the ball over 17 times… the Chargers were led by
Grant Sareyka with 19 points and
Camden Hurst with 18 points… Andre Ballard had a game high 23 points for the Lions.
