Field Hockey Caps Off Homecoming with 2-1 Victory

The Lancaster Bible College Field Hockey team ended Homecoming weekend with a 2-1 win over the visiting Southern Virginia Knights on Saturday evening. The Chargers improve to 2-8 overall while the Knights fall to 0-6 on the season.

How It Happened: The first half didn't feature a ton of action as both teams traded possession. The Knights created some offensive momentum in the first period before the Chargers returned the favor with four shots and a corner in the second period but neither team was able to find the scoreboard.

It was the second half that the game saw it's first score as sophomore Merci Craft scored her first collegiate goal on a great one-two-three play from Mira Rineer and Alexis Gilbert. The two teams continued to trade scoring opportunities but neither were able to convert.

It was the final five minutes of the game that proved to be the most intense as the Knights equalized the game in the 56th minute. With a sense of urgency and time running out the Chargers looked for every opportunity to reclaim the lead including several positive looks. In the 59th minute of the game, commotion happened in the box off a Chargers attack leading to a penalty shot which sophomore Riley Danko converted in the left side of the goal to retake the lead and win the game 2-1.

From the Coach: "We were able to withstand some unexpected pressure and stepped it up in the second half," said Head Coach Becky Elliott. "We stayed composed, stuck with the game plan and finally capitalized on our chances."

By the Numbers: The Chargers outshot the visitors 13-11 with ten of those shots being on goal... the penalty corners went in favor of the Chargers 6-5... the Knights had eight saves to the Chargers five... Merci Craft and Riley Danko had the goals for the Chargers... Mira Rineer and Alexis Gilbert had an assist... Morgan Smith scored for the Knights.

Up Next: The Chargers stay at home for another non-conference matchup with Stevenson on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
