During the first half of the Lancaster Bible College women's soccer match against the Ramapo Roadrunners, it looked as though the Chargers were playing the part of the Wile E. Coyote as the Roadrunners ran all over them, scoring twice and dominating play.
After a halftime speech by the coaching staff that corrected many aspects of their play, the Chargers found momentum of their own and made it 2-1 with 12 minutes to play before falling 3-1 Monday at Charger Field.
Ramapo's Brittney Harraka and Mallory Cornett scored first half goals for the Roadrunners (8-6). Ramapo out shot the Chargers 12-1 in the first half and controlled play for most of the 45 minutes.
"We made some corrections at halftime that were key to our second half play," Charger Head Coach
Ken Craul said. "We need better visualization from our players in the first half, not just in the second."
The Chargers (2-11-1) began to chip away at the Roadrunner momentum in the middle of the second half before sophomore
Danielle Musselman scored with just under 15 minutes remaining to make it 2-1. Musselman scored off a rebound from
Becka Hixson's free kick from 30 yards out.
Ramapo's Melanie Pupo scored 10 minutes later to put the game away for the visitors. Craul was happy with LBC's recovery in the second half.
"We had a talk with the team on Friday about how we wanted to play the last five games of the season," Craul said. "We told them it was up to them how they wanted to finish the year. I think today they showed how they want to finish the season."
Craul also stressed the importance of ending the season positively for next year.
"We don't want to talk too much about next season because these last few games are important, but it will be nice to have something to take into the off-season if we can play well and try some things out," Craul said.
One of the things the Charger staff tried out on Monday was freshman
Emily Lloyd in goal. Lloyd has played the entire year on defense, but will begin her stint as the Charger goalkeeper next season because senior goalkeeper
Kirsten Shoemaker graduates.
"It was good for Emily to see some action back there," Charger Assistant Coach Susanna Sullivan said.
Lloyd made 10 saves in her goalkeeping debut. Shoemaker played defense in her place.
For the match, the Roadrunners out shot the Chargers 25-6 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
LBC returns to action on Wednesday when they face The College of Notre Dame in Maryland at 3:00 p.m.
