"New Guys" Help Chargers Beat Crusaders

Even without their big guns, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team still has firepower, even if it comes from unlikely places.

The Chargers scored four times in the second half to defeat Christendom 5-1 on Wednesday in Fort Royal, Va. Freshmen Keith Keltner and Sean Westerlund and sophomore Grant Lockard scored their first career collegiate goals to lead LBC to victory.

Because of injuries to forwards Cory Greiser and Kyle Zook, the Chargers (11-6) left Lancaster with a limited cast.

"New guys had to step up today and they did," Charger Head Coach Josh Beers said.

Keltner opened the scoring in the 37th minute as the Chargers took a 1-0 lead into the half. The Crusaders tied it seven minutes into the second half. The score remained tied before Travis Weyandt scored off a pass from Zak Kraehmer in the 71st minute.

Kraehmer added his own goal a couple of minutes later off a pass from Lawrence Lartey. Lockard capped the three goal outburst two minutes later scoring. Westerlund ended the scoring in the 86th minute when he scored off a Zach Kutz pass.

Beers was especially happy with the play of Kraehmer.

"I was very pleased with the game Zak Kraehmer had tonight," Beers said. "That was one of his better collegiate games."

Even though the Chargers held a physical advantage over the Crusaders, the game was close most of the way through.

"They competed hard, and the field conditions definitely equaled the playing field," Beers said. "It was a sloppy win, but we'll take it and get back to work on Monday."

The Chargers return to action on Monday when they travel to Purcellville, Va. to take on Patrick Henry at 4:00 p.m.
