Chargers Shutout Manhattan, Take 5th Place at Nationals

Sean Westerlund did it again.

Westerlund scored the game-winning goal for the second straight game as the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team took home fifth place at the NCCAA National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida, by defeating Manhattan Christian 1-0.

Goalkeeper Jake Kreider earned his eighth shutout of the season, making eight saves.

"Jake and Kevin Keltner played terrific for us today in our defensive end," Charger Head Coach Josh Beers said. "We were in our half for most of the game, and they were great."

Westerlund's goal in the 32nd minute was set up by Jordan Westphal who played the ball ahead of Westerlund who made a great individual effort to put the Chargers ahead.

"Sean simply beat two guys to the ball and put it into the back of the cage," Beers said. "It was a great individual play."

While Beers said the Chargers were outplayed for much of the game, he also said it was nice to get the win and get everyone playing time.

"I feel really happy for all of our guys, especially senior Eric Gregory," Beers said.

The Chargers finish the season with a record of 17-7. Their 17 wins are the most in school history.

"This was the last step in a great season," Beers said. "There were so many good things that happened this year."

While the team will enjoy their final day in Florida, Beers is already thinking about getting back there next year.

"We thank the Lord for helping us to get this far this season," Beers said. "But we have to get to work for next year pretty soon so we can try and get back here again."
