Strong NJCU Squad Powers Past Chargers

New Jersey City University striker Julia Caseres has been named offensive player of the week two weeks running in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, after being held in-check for the first half by the Lancaster Bible College defense, she showed why she leads the team in goals and points.

Caseres' two second half goals, the first that broke a 1-1 tie, led the Gothic Knights (6-2) past the Chargers  4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Jersey City, NJ.

LBC (1-3) sophomore Danielle Musselman opened the scoring 26:39 into the game. After Gothic Knight goalkeeper Kelly Reilly cleared a ball from the top of the box, Musselman collected the ball and chipped it over Reilly for her first goal of the season.

The Gothic Knights tied the game six minutes later and the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.

Less than two minutes after Caseres 15th goal of the year made it 2-1, NJCU's Ashley Cunha scored on a goal just out of the reach of Charger goalkeeper Kirsten Shoemaker to make it 3-1.

Despite giving up four goals, Charger Head Coach Ken Craul was pleased with the way the team played on the offensive and defensive side.

"Jenna Godwin and Kelsee McLaughlin played well in our end of the field," Craul said. "And our offense is also starting to play as a unit."

LBC sophomore Kristina Clairmont scored the Chargers' second goal of the game on a great pass from senior Meredith Wrightson with 12 minutes remaining to cut the Gothic Knight lead in half, but the NJCU defense clamped down and limited the chances the Chargers got the rest of the way.

For the game, NJCU outshot LBC 41-7 and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Craul and the team took the positives away from playing a tough opponent though.

"Our offense is starting to see the complete field and our possession of the ball has been increasing as our season progresses," Craul said.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they host Baptist Bible at 1:00 p.m.
