The Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team ended their long week by hosting three matches on Saturday at Horst Athletic Center. Unfortunately for the Chargers, being at home did not help their inconsistent play.
LBC (8-12) lost to Stevenson, 3-0 in the opener, won the middle match against New Jersey City, 3-0, and dropped the finale to Bryn Mawr, 3-1.
The Chargers got six kills and 17 digs from
Lauren Heliger against Stevenson, but could not overcome the tall, hard-hitting Mustangs. Stevenson (16-2) won 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 and was led by Jessica Gieselman's 20 assists and eight kills.
LBC rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of New Jersey City, but could not sustain the momentum against Bryn Mawr.
After losing the first two games, the Chargers took the third set and led at many points of the fourth set before the Owls pulled ahead late. Bryn Mawr won, 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21.
Hailee Growden had a season-high 18 kills and 18 assists for the Chargers. Junior
Peggy Compton added 12 kills, 26 assists and 15 digs. Heliger and
Jenae Almas each had 18 digs for the Chargers.
"We got better as the day went on," LBC Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said. "We played more as a team then we had previously in the week."
Five LBC players had double-digit digs in the four set match, but timely errors continue to haunt the Chargers.
"We need a more consistent effort and attitude," Bewley said.
Bewley said she was impressed with Compton and Growden's effort against Bryn Mawr.
"Peggy was our go-to person during that last match," Bewley said. "When we needed a point, Peggy put them away. Hailee's kills helped create momentum and motivated us throughout the match."
LBC has another big week ahead of them as they play seven more matches. They will face NCCAA East Region rival Valley Forge Christian on Monday to kick things off. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Phoenixville, Pa.
