Players New and Old Help Chargers Beat Aggies

Peggy Comton (near) and Brittney Becker go up for the block.
With no freshman and no seniors, the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team has no players who stand out because of their seniority or because of their inexperience. What they do have is consistent and tough players who after one match look as though they have the make-up of a solid team.

Using strong defense and timely kills, the Chargers defeated Delaware Valley College, 3-1 on Wednesday night at Horst Athletic Center. LBC won 25-14, 23-25, 26-24, 25-16.

"To beat Delaware Valley is a great start to the season," Chargers Head Coach Lauren Bewley said. "We have been competitive with them the past couple of seasons, but have always come up short. It was great to be on the winning side."

The opening day win is the first for LBC since 2002 when they defeated Valley Forge Christian.

LBC was led by Peggy Compton's 13 kills, 20 assists and nine digs. Junior Hailee Growden added nine kills, 18 assists, 12 digs and five crowd-roaring blocks. Brittney Becker led the way with 18 digs.

"Brittney's leadership was key for us tonight," Bewley said. "She had no unforced errors and she helped the team get back on track at important times."

Bewley was also impressed with newcomer Hannah Fogle.

"She had a good level of intensity tonight," Bewley said. "She stepped into the libero role and played very well."

LBC will travel to Florida on Thursday to compete in the Clearwater Christian College Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. Many of the teams at the tournament are NAIA Division teams and can award athletic scholarships to student-athletes.

After winning on Wednesday night, the Chargers have a positive outlook on the upcoming trip.

"Our mentality heading to Florida is, 'Let's get better,'" Bewley said. "We are hoping to use the trip as a building block for the rest of our season.

After returning home from Florida, the Chargers will travel to Reading, Pa. to take on Alvernia on Thursday, September 9.
