Chargers Split Tri-match with Penn State Harrisburg and F & M

Throughout the season, teams generally have a match or game that indicates what type of season they are going to have. The game reveals that yes, you are that bad - or yes, there is some promise here. Tuesday night revealed the latter for the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team.

After sweeping Penn State Harrisburg, 3-0, the Chargers battled Franklin & Marshall and though they lost in four sets, proved that they are for real in 2010.

In the opener, LBC beat the Nittany Lions, 25-11, 25-18, 25-14. Junior Peggy Compton had 14 kills, 12 assists and 10 digs to lead the Chargers. Lauren Hurd had six aces to help LBC to victory. The Chargers' .215 hitting percentage was their second straight match hitting over .200. That marks the second time this season LBC has hit over .200 in back-to-back matches.

In the second match, the Chargers played the Diplomats tough the entire night. After dropping the first set, 25-17, LBC won the second set 25-23 and swung the momentum back their way. F & M returned the favor gaining the edge back with a 25-17 win in the third set and battled back from a 23-20 defecit to win 26-24 in the fourth set.

"Tonight was probably the best we have played all season," LBC Head Coach Lauren Bewley said. "We played smart. We weren't just hitting to get the ball over the net, but we were hitting it to spots where they weren't."

The Chargers (5-8) were once again led by Compton who had 15 kills, 17 assists and 11 digs.

"Peggy played very well," Bewley said. "She played great defense, had some solid kills and her passing was on as well."

Junior Hailee Growden had nine kills, 15 assists and eight digs, while Lauren Heliger had seven kills and team-leading 14 digs.

Despite the loss, Bewley was pleased with the Chargers will to win and their determination.

"The hunger to win is there," Bewley said. "The results from that hunger will follow. Beating teams we are supposed to beat isn't good enough anymore. We want to play and beat good teams."

Bewley noted that one of the biggest things the team needs to work on, is finding that drive and hunger against weaker teams.

"We need to make sure we are playing consistently against every team we play and not just teams that are better than us," Bewley said.

LBC will host Penn State Brandywine on Thursday night at Horst Athletic Center. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
