It wasn't pretty and it wasn't easy, but the total team effort on Monday helped the Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team to their second straight win.
Sophomore
Whitney Heise's goal into the top right corner of the net in the 70th minute held up as the game winner as LBC defeated Goucher, 1-0 on Labor Day.
"This was a big win for us," Chargers' Head Coach
Ken Craul said. "It builds our confidence level at a time when we are still trying to figure out where and who we are as a team."
Both teams held possession for large periods of time during the first half in which Goucher out shot the Chargers 11-6, but neither team could convert on their scoring chances. Both teams hit the crossbar in the first half, including LBC's
Karyn Harkness who drilled the crossbar from 20 yards out on a free kick.
The Chargers (2-1) began to take the play of the game over early in the second half which culminated with Heise's goal. LBC then held off a prolonged Gopher attack to preserve the victory.
"We had an outstanding effort by everyone today," Craul said. "Especially the last five minutes of the game."
Craul also said he was happy with how his team responded to different parts of the game.
"Today's game tested our character and we were able to maintain our composure," Craul said.
The back-to-back wins are the first for LBC since September 23-25, 2008 when they defeated Valley Forge Christian and Penn State-Abington. After going 2-14-2 last season, the Chargers have already matched last season's win total.
"This group understands what happened last season, how we got complacent and content too often," Craul said. "Today we didn't accept just getting one goal and giving up, we gave everything we had and won the game."
Just three games into the season, Craul can already see differences from last season's team.
"These girls want more," Craul said. "They don't want to simply show up and compete, they want to play hard and win."
Up next for the Chargers is another tough opponent in Lycoming. LBC lost 5-0 to the Warriors last season in Lancaster. Craul said the team is excited for the challenge.
"Lycoming will be a good measuring stick for us as a team," Craul said. "They are a good team and we will see just how much we have improved."
The Chargers battle the Warriors on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in Williamsport, Pa.
