Monica Horning's goal with 15 seconds remaining gave the Lancaster Bible College women's socccer team a 2-1 victory over rival Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday and wrapped up the top seed in the NCCAA East Region playoffs that begin later this month.
Horning opened the scoring nine minutes into the second half off a pass from
Jenna Godwin. LBC's lead wouldn't last long however as PBU's Sarah Vogel tied the game two minutes later. Vogel's goal came off a corner kick that was deflected in front and went right to her foot and into the goal.
The game remained tied and appeared headed for overtime, but the Chargers earned one of their 12 corner kicks on the day with under 30 seconds to go.
Ally Brown took the corner kick for the Chargers and as happened for PBU earlier, the ball was deflected and went right to Horning was 14 yards out. Horning ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net and secured the Chargers' 12th straight victory.
"PBU played well against us," Chargers' Head Coach
Ken Craul said. "They pressured the ball through the midfield very well and it took us a while to solve that."
Craul was pleased that the team responded well to a close game for the second straight contest.
"We weren't on our heals at all after they tied the game," Craul said. "We started playing with more possession and we aren't cocky, but we know as a team that we will get more chances to score if we play our brand of soccer."
LBC [12-1 overall, 7-0 NEAC] out shot the Crimson Eagles, 30-7 and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, LBC clinches the number one seed in the NCCAA East Region playoffs. The rest of the seed are yet to be determined, but the Chargers are 3-0 against the other East Region teams and thus are the top seed.
"Not having to travel during the playoffs is nice," Craul said. "When we are at home, we can keep our routines and there are no distractions or long van rides. Plus, we get to play on our own turf and we take ownership of playing at home and defending our place."
LBC will return to NEAC play on Thursday when they host College of St. Elizabeth at 2:30 p.m.
Notes:
-This is the first time since 2004 that the Chargers will be the #1 seed in the East Region playoffs. LBC lost in the East Region Finals that season, 4-3 to Baptist Bible.
