Heliger's Career Night Not Enough as Chargers Fall to Cardinals, 3-1

The bad news - the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team lost its sixth straight match on Wednesday night to Catholic University, 3-1.

The good news - the Chargers lost, but played just about as well as a team can play and not get a win.

LBC lost, 28-26, 22-25, 25-13, 25-11 to the Cardinals at Horst Athletic Center, but for 2 1/2 sets, the Chargers traded punch for punch with 19-3 Catholic. Junior Lauren Heliger had a match-high 23 kills and a school-record 34 digs for LBC, while freshman Lauren Donato had nine kills and 17 digs.

"The first and second sets were identical and we battled in the first and won the second," Chargers' Assistant Coach Evelyn Long said. "We simply ran out of steam in the third and fourth sets."

Long, who filled in for head coach Lauren Bewley on Wednesday, was happy the team could stay in the match with their play during the first two sets, but that those two sets took a lot out of the team.

"We kept getting ourselves into a hole and while we played well and battled, it takes a lot to get out of those holes," Long said. "We just couldn't keep up with them physically and their team depth really helped them."

Freshman Katie Coomber had 37 kills and three aces for LBC [11-12 overall, 6-2 NEAC] and Rachel Olson had six kills and 23 digs. Even though LBC has lost six straight matches, Long said the team has played well during each of the matches.

"We have played strong volleyball during the last six matches against tough teams," Long said. "We are becoming better, but we aren't the team we are going to be."

Long added that she thinks the team can maintain its current level of play and they simply need to show a little more consistency throughout the entire match.

"We just have those moments every-so-often where we aren't focused and things tend to go wrong," Long said. "With a little more focus, we can win these matches."

LBC will play its final two regular season NEAC matches this Saturday when they take on SUNYIT and SUNY Cobleskill. The matches will be played on the campus of College of St. Elizabeth.

The Chargers have one home match remaining which will be Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. against Mount Aloysius. It will be Senior Night and LBC will honor seniors Brittney Becker and Lauren Hurd prior to the match.

Notes:
-Senior Brittney Becker became the second person in school history with 1,000 digs.
