One step forward, two steps back. Thus describes Tuesday night and frankly, much of the 2011 season for the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team.
Against visiting Mount Aloysius on Tuesday, just when it seemed momentum was beginning to turn the Chargers' way, a few errors or bad plays would tip the score the other way and it would take LBC too long to come back. It happened in sets, two, three and four as LBC lost to Mount Aloysius, 3-1. The Mounties won, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23.
After taking a back-and-forth first set, LBC gave up an 11-4 run in the middle of the second set and could not come back from the deficit. In the third set, the Chargers fell behind 7-3 and 15-10 before tying the set at 22-22. After the teams' exchanged points, the Chargers made two straight errors and lost 25-23. In the final set, LBC once again fell behind early, only to battle back to tie it again at 22-22. Two Mount Aloysius kills and an LBC error later and the Chargers had lost for eighth time in nine matches.
"We fought hard, but we just didn't fight in the right way some of the time," Chargers' Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said. "We just fell behind too often."
Lauren Heliger led the Chargers with 18 kills and 24 digs, while
Lauren Donato added 10 kills and 12 digs. Katie Coomber and
Emily Timberlake split time at setter with Coomber earning 21 assists and Timberlake adding 20.
With two regular season matches remaining before the NCCAA East Region playoffs and the NEAC playoffs, Bewley hoped Tuesday's match would build some toughness in the Chargers.
"Hopefully we can build some mental toughness from a match like this," Bewley said.
LBC [12-14] is back in action on Friday night when they travel to Annville, Pa. to take on Lebanon Valley at 7:00 p.m.
