Horning's Late Goal Secures Win and Top Seed for Chargers

Shot after shot was wide, high or saved. It didn't matter if it was a good chance, a long shot on goal or just a flick from midfield, nothing would go into the back of the goal for the Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team. Finally, after 33 shots, freshman Monica Horning gathered the ball in the box and found the back of the net for the Chargers.

Horning's goal with 7:14 to play broke a scoreless tie and propelled LBC to its 15th straight win and clinched the top seed in next month's NEAC Playoffs with a 1-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill. The Chargers are 15-1 overall and 10-0 in NEAC play. With one regular season game remaining, LBC has a one-game lead over Penn St. Abington, but holds the tie-breaker over the Nittany Lions because of their 3-0 win over Abington in September.

LBC completely dominated play on Saturday, out shooting SUNY Cobleskill, 34-4 and holding a 10-0 edge in corner kicks. The large discrepancy didn't matter though as the game remained scoreless late into the second half.

"The ladies didn't appear frustrated, they remained patient," Chargers' Head Coach Ken Craul said of his team. "We told them prior to the game that teams are going to pack the box against us and we just need to capitalize on our quality shots and good opportunities."

After controlling play in the first half, Craul said LBC moved its midfielders and defenders up to keep play in the Cobleskill end.

"[Karyn] Harkness and [Evelyn] Stauffer played well in the midfield today," Craul said. "I have confidence in all of the kids that we are going to score at some point, especially if we get 30+ shots."

Craul also said he liked the fact the game was close, especially this time of year.

"It's good to play a close game," Craul said. "We've been fortunate to play a couple of games that weren't that close and a game like this keeps everyone sharp."

Saturday was also senior day for LBC. The Chargers honored Rebekah Weidel, Danielle Musselman, Kristina Clairmont and Jenna Godwin prior to Saturday's game. Craul, who has been with the ladies for three of their four years, commended all of the seniors for their leadership on and off the field.

"All the seniors are playing well this season," Craul said. "It's not just their ability and leadership on the field, but off it as well."

Craul singled out Musselman as a player who has embraced her role on the team.

"Dani's attitude is great," Craul said. "Unfortunately because of her injuries and surgeries, she isn't on the field as much, but she is encouraging to the team and she provides great insight to the other bench players."

LBC's regular season finale will be Tuesday at Gallaudet at 6:00 p.m. A win would give them a perfect 11-0 record in first season of NEAC play. The NCCAA East Region Playoffs begin on Wednesday when LBC hosts Valley Forge Christian at 3:00 p.m.

Notes:
-Whitney Heise and Olivia Rentzel assisted on Horning's goal.

-LBC's 15 wins match the mark the team had last season when they went 15-8. A win on Tuesday would tie the school record 16 wins the 2004 squad had.
