Chargers' NCCAA Championship Hopes End With Loss to Northland

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team had waited two years to get back to the NCCAA Division II National Tournament. After losing a tough game in the first round of the 2009 tournament to Southeastern, 3-2 in overtime, the Chargers came to this year's tournament looking to do some damage from the 6th seed.

Unfortunately, all they did was repeat the tough loss part and will have to once again win twice to earn a 5th place finish. LBC's opponent Northland International University scored three minutes into Wednesday's contest and held off a late Chargers' rally to win, 2-1 and advance to Thursday's NCCAA National Semi-Finals.

After Northland made it 2-0 midway through the second half, it appeared the Chargers would go quietly into the consolation round, but Lawrence Lartey's goal with 14 minutes remaining gave LBC life.

"We pressed hard, but just didn't get enough chances at the end," Chargers' Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "We had some chances earlier in the game, but we didn't defend well enough in the midfield today."

Though LBC [9-11-3] will still have a chance to repeat its 5th place finish from 2009, Ardt said the guys were unhappy with their play on Wednesday.

"The guys are obviously frustrated, but we have two games left and we can still end the season well," Ardt said.

The Chargers will take on Dallas Christian College on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. Dallas Christian lost, 7-1 to Ohio Christian on Wednesday.

Notes:
-The goal was Lartey's 6th of the season and 20th of his career which moves him into a tie for 15th place all-time with Doug Harris [1979-81] and Troy DeBruin [1991, '93].
