For the second straight season the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team opened the season with a win, this year against Cedar Crest, 3-1. The Chargers won, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21, 25-17.
After not winning an opening match from 2003-09, the Chargers have now rattled off two straight after defeating Delaware Valley last season and the Falcons this year.
Chargers' Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said she was impressed by the confidence the team showed from the get-go.
"They all played with so much confidence," Bewley said. "I was impressed because we started three freshmen and even they were very confident."
The freshmen -
Lauren Donato,
Rachel Olson and Katie Coomber - all played very well in their first collegiate match.
"Katie, as the setter, is basically running the team as a freshman," Bewley said. "She is embracing the challenge and made something out of nothing a couple of times tonight."
Bewley said the Chargers' serve-receive was excellent and one of the keys to LBC's victory.
"We had one serve-receive error the entire night," Bewley said. "Our ability to control the serve and play good defense is going to help us."
Because the freshmen played with such confidence, Bewley said it was very encouraging to the upperclassmen.
"It was great for the upperclassmen to see the freshmen embracing their first collegiate match and battling each point," Bewley said. "Everyone was encouraging each other the entire night."
Bewley said there are obviously things the team needs to work on, but that she was happy with the first match of the season.
"As I have said all pre-season long, we have potential," Bewley said.
The Chargers will look to show more of that potential on Saturday when they travel to Doylestown, Pa. for a tri-match with Bryn Mawr and Delaware Valley. LBC will face the Owls at 1 p.m. and the Aggies at 3 p.m.
