Chargers Let Two-Set Lead Slip Away

Box Score It was all going so well. And then it wasn't.

For two sets, the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team could do very little wrong. From serving to defense, the Chargers took control of the match by winning the first two sets and appeared destined to finally beat Lycoming, a team they hadn't beaten in four tries.

The Warriors, owners of a 16-5 record coming into the match, would not go quietly however and after taking the third set from the Chargers, powered their way to a fourth set victory and hung on to defeat LBC, 15-11 in the fifth set.

Lycoming snapped LBC's three-game winning streak by winning, 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11.

It was LBC who took command early by ripping 15 kills in the opening set with .310 hitting percentage. From there, they took the second set, 25-21 as they converted their opportunities and held off a late charge from Lycoming.

The Chargers (10-15) opened the third set with some sloppy play, but managed to stay in the set for a little while. The Warriors took control midway through the set however and won the set, 25-18 due in part to 14 kills.

"I really thought after that third set that we would rebound and play a better fourth set," Chargers' Head Coach Lauren Bewley said. "The other day in practice, the ladies played a few sets to 25 and after losing the first set pretty handily, the ladies responded and won the next one."

Unfortunately, the Warriors took all of the momentum from the third and pummeled the Chargers in the fourth set, 25-13. Lycoming had just nine kills in the set, but poor serve receive by LBC aided the Warriors' cause and the Chargers serving dropped off significantly from the first and second set.

The teams traded points until 4-4 in the fifth set when the Warriors took control and opened up a 13-7 lead. After a timeout, the Chargers cut the lead to 13-11, but would not get any closer as Lycoming won, 15-11.

"We underestimated ourselves tonight," Bewley said. "We lacked the mental toughness to finish the job and thought they would just hand us the win after the first two sets."

Despite the tough loss, Bewley told her team that there were many things the Chargers can take from this match and use the rest of the season.

"I'm disappointed we lost, but this is the perfect time in the season to have a loss like this," Bewley said. "There are so many things we can take from this and apply to not only the regular season, but the playoffs. We have to grow and learn to believe in ourselves and complete the job."

Chargers' senior Lauren Heliger had 20 kills and 21 digs to lead LBC. It is the second time this season she has had a 20-20 game as she did it against Cairn University on Sept. 25 in LBC's five-set victory. Lauren Daniels added 11 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Hannah Metzler had 15 digs and 35 assists.

The Chargers are back in action on Saturday when they travel down Route 81 to take on Eastern Mennonite at 1 p.m. and Shenandoah at 6 p.m.
