Box Score Not sure many seniors have a Senior Night like this.
Lancaster Bible College senior
Lauren Heliger celebrated Senior Night by turning a 19-kill, 31-dig performance to help lead the Chargers past Goucher in a five-set thriller, 3-2. The Chargers won, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13, defeating Goucher for the first time in program history. The match was LBC's seventh five-set match of the season and they improved to 2-5 in those matches.
After dropping a close first set in which they led for most of it, the Chargers rebounded and took sets two and three with strong play defensively, as well as timely kills on offense. The Gophers would not go away however and took the fourth set, 25-21 setting up an epic fifth set that saw both teams gain and lose momentum.
The Chargers jumped out to a 9-5 lead, but saw that evaporate quickly as the Gophers tied the set at 9-9 on an ace by Addie Lanzarotta. Heliger's 19th kill of the night made it 10-9, but the Gophers responded again and took three of the next four points making it 12-11 Goucher. The Chargers grabbed the next two points on a Goucher error and a kill from
Lauren Daniels, making it 13-12 LBC.
After a Gophers' timeout, Goucher tied the match at 13-13, but a thunderous kill by
Lauren Daniels gave LBC match point and
Hannah Metzler ended the match with her seventh kill of the night from the setter position by surprising the Goucher defense yet again with a quick strike.
"We were scrappy tonight," Chargers' Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said. "We supported our hitters very well at the net. Goucher is a great blocking team and we kept a lot of balls in play after Goucher had blocked the ball."
In addition to Heliger's monster night, Daniels had 18 kills and 18 digs, while Metzler added 11 digs and 45 assists to go along with her seven kills.
Katie Coomber also had a solid match with nine kills and seven digs.
The night however, belonged to Heliger and fellow senior
Naomi Martin.
"Heliger wanted it tonight," Bewley said. "She led the team with desire. Her and Naomi helped the team play well together tonight."
Bewley also mentioned Daniels and how many of her kills changed the momentum of the match.
"She was clutch on a lot of big plays tonight," Bewley said. "She played well defensively too."
Grace Scheuerman and
Joanna Butala also played well defensively as they tallied 22 and 19 digs respectively.
