Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's soccer team won its eighth straight game on Saturday, defeating Penn St. Harrisburg, 2-1 at Charger Field.
Monica Horning and
Ally Brown each had a goal for the Chargers who moved to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in NEAC play with the victory.
Just over seven minutes into the game, Horning crossed a ball into the box, where it found
Ally Brown who headed the ball directly into the net to give LBC an early, 1-0 lead. The teams traded long periods of possession for much of the first half, with LBC getting the better of the play. LBC was rewarded for their possession with 2:26 to play in the first half as
Bethany Stein found Horning who buried her 12th goal of the season into the back of the net to give LBC a two-goal lead heading into the half.
Penn St. Harrisburg's Lyndsay Naughton cut LBC's lead in half with just under 15 minutes remaining, but the Nittany Lions had few chances after that as LBC hung on for the one-goal win.
"It was definitely a tale of two halves," Chargers Head Coach
Ken Craul said. "We played well in the first half and didn't play that well in the second. Fortunately, we defended well when we had to down the stretch and were able to win."
With both teams near the top of the NEAC standings, Craul thought the Chargers may have put some added pressure on themselves to win on Saturday, especially after Friday's 7-0 win over Wilson.
"I think some of the ladies played tight at times because they wanted to play well against a good team," Craul said. "There is nothing wrong with that, we just need to make sure we are in it whole time and maintain our focus."
Horning is second on the team in points with 31, while Brown, who has fought injuries most of the season, is beginning to regain the form that made her the NEAC Player of the Year last season.
"The plays they made today were excellent," Craul said of Horning and Brown. "They are so well-rounded as players that those types of plays are expected out of them."
Craul also spoke highly of
Kathryn Ritter, who played a strong game at midfield for the Chargers.
"She doesn't always light up the scoresheet, but she competes hard in her area for a full 90 minutes," Craul said.
LBC is back in action on Wednesday when they host Gallaudet at 3:00 p.m.
