Chargers Blank Penn St. Harrisburg, Advance to NEAC Final

Box Score The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team defeated Penn St. Harrisburg, 3-0 on Saturday to advance to its second straight North Eastern Athletic Conference Final. The Chargers will take on top-seeded Penn St. Berks in Sunday's NEAC Final, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Berks defeated SUNYIT, 4-0 in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Whitney Heise, Monica Horning and Ally Brown each had a goal for the Chargers who improved to 16-4 this season.

After fighting off an early Penn St. Harrisburg onslaught, the Chargers began to advance the ball and have quality offensive chances that resulted in Heise's goal at 22:47. Heise's shot from the wing sailed up and over Nittany Lions' goalkeeper Mackenzie Gates to give LBC an early, 1-0 lead.

"Those first five minutes, we spent a lot time in our end because of their attack and the wind," Chargers' Head Coach Ken Craul said. "We started connecting a few small passes and began to move the ball up the field."

Craul said Heise's goal appeared to take the wind out of Harrisburg's sails a bit.

"I think that first goal knocked them back a bit," Craul said. "To have the wind be such an advantage, but you still give up a goal, I think that hurt them mentally for a little while."

Horning's 20th goal of the season went off a Nittany Lions' defender and in at 66:15 and Brown's goal just over five minutes later sealed the Chargers' second straight trip to the conference final.

"I think we have a better mindset about things this year than we did last year," Craul said. "Things were quite easy for us last season and in the NEAC Final they weren't and we didn't react very well. This season, we have played tough games and are ready for Sunday."

Craul also added that all of the returners from last season's team remember what it felt like to get so close to the NEAC Title and then have it ripped away.

"The ladies and the coaching staff do not want to have those feelings again," Craul said. "We all remember what it was like and it was not a good feeling."
