Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Cedar Crest in the nightcap of a doubleheader that saw the Chargers lose to Gettysburg as well.
In the opening match, LBC lost to Gettysburg, 3-1. The Bullets won, 25-13, 25-15, 19-25, 25-16. The Chargers'
Lauren Heliger had 11 kills and 10 digs to lead LBC, while
Lauren Daniels added nine kills and six digs.
"I thought we played great defense against Gettysburg," LBC Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said. "They are just so tall that it makes us switch our hitting and where we are able to place the ball."
In the second match, the Chargers jumped on the Falcons quickly in the first set and cruised to 25-19 victory. In the second set, the teams went back and forth for much of the set, but with the score tied at 17-17, LBC strung together eight straight points to take the set, 25-17.
The third set looked to be going to the Falcons as they led 20-15 and had frustrated the Chargers for most of the set. Once again however, the Chargers began to string points together and were able to take a 23-22 lead. After Cedar Crest fought off a match point to tie it at 24-24, the Chargers earned another match point off a kill by
Lauren Daniels. The match's final point was a great one as the teams went back-and-forth before Heliger's thunderous kill down the line iced the game for LBC.
"Heliger played great tonight in both matches," Bewley said. "Our leader led tonight."
Bewley was also happy with the team's consistent serving and bench play.
"
Britany Stout did a great job serving tonight and
Faith Scheuerman was able to come off the bench and step in nicely for us," Bewley said.
LBC's ability to play tight sets and come back from deficits is something the team has learned early on this season. Though their 1-7 record might not indicate it, the Chargers have been playing fairly well this season.
"We are growing in our mental toughness," Bewley said. "When you play tough teams, like Gettysburg and Haverford, you can't give up, so when we play teams that are closer to us, we have the toughness to beat them."
LBC is back in action on Thursday when host Alvernia at 7 p.m.
