Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball lost in the NCCAA East Region Final for the second straight season on Saturday and for the second straight year, Cairn was the cause of that loss.
The Chargers lost to the Highlanders, 3-0 in the East Region Final, just an hour after having to hold off Baptist Bible, 3-2 in five sets in the East Region Semifinals.
In the semifinals, LBC junior
Katie Coomber had arguably the best statistical performance by any LBC player in program history as she tallied 25 kills and 33 digs in the Chargers' five-set victory. Coomber hit at a .189 clip and added a block and two assists as well. Her 25 kills match the program record held by
Lauren Heliger, while her 33 digs are the third most in program history.Â
LBC (13-22) had 141 digs in the five sets which broke the previous record of 136 set in last season's four-set victory over Keuka in the NEAC Quarterfinals. Sophomore
Rachel Olson had 26 of those digs and added 11 kills. Fellow sophomore
Hannah Metzler had 24 digs to go with her 36 assists, while
Grace Scheuerman added 22 digs.Â
The Chargers raced out to a 2-0 lead over the Defenders, but BBC charged back to win the next two sets. The Chargers and Defenders went back-and-forth in the final set before LBC finally pulled away and won, 15-12. LBC won, 26-24, 25-17, 15-25, 18-25, 15-12.Â
In the East Region Final, the powerhouse Highlanders (21-5) took it to LBC early and often has they cruised to a three-set victory, 25-19, 25-12, 25-18. Coomber and Olson each had 10 kills, while Coomber had 16 digs and Olson had 13 digs. The rest of the LBC team managed just eight kills as LBC was swept by Cairn for the second time this season.
"We played the best we could and played true to ourselves," Chargers Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said. "I'm proud of the team and we have no regrets with how we fared today."
The Chargers play their final home match of the season on Monday when they host Alvernia at 7 p.m. They will wrap-up the regular season next Saturday when they face Messiah and Wilkes in Grantham, Pa. LBC will then prepare for the NEAC playoffs in which they are the fifth seed. They will face Penn St. Berks on Tuesday, Nov. 5 in Reading, Pa. at 7 p.m.
