Lancaster Bible Completes Perfect Weekend

Box Score In terms of a perfect soccer weekend, there isn't much else the Lancaster Bible women's soccer team could have asked for. Maybe less heat, but for October 4-5, beggars can't be choosers.

The Chargers completed back-to-back shutouts by blanking Keuka, 4-0 on Saturday at Charger Field. The win moves the Chargers to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in NEAC play. With 18 points (3 points for a win) in the NEAC, LBC is alone in second place behind Penn St. Berks who is a perfect 7-0 with 21 points.

On Saturday, the Chargers started slow as each team possessed the ball and earned a few scoring chances. LBC slowly began to take over play and was rewarded when Bethany Stein scored her ninth goal of the year at the 19:28 mark. Less than eight minutes later, freshman Alyssa Wesner scored her ninth goal of the year as LBC doubled their lead to 2-0.

The Chargers continued to control play for the rest of the first half despite being a bit sluggish through much of the first half. Playing their second game in as many days, a sluggish first half usually translates into trouble in the second half, but the Chargers came out firing and continued to control play, something Head Coach Ken Craul was pleased to see.

"I was really impressed with our second half," Craul said. "I know we were tired, but I thought we were still there mentally and continued to play well."

Midway through the second frame, Wesner scored her team-leading 10th goal of the year off a beautiful cross from Stein. Stein dribbled the ball down the right-hand side of the field and fired a cross into the box where Wesner was waiting. Wesner's header found the back of the net as she became just the third freshman in LBC history to score 10 or more goals in a season.

Just over eight minutes later, sophomore Brooke Cullum made it 4-0 when she banked a shot from the side of the net off of one of the Storm's defenders and into the back of the net. Cullum's eighth goal of the year gives the Chargers four players with eight or more goals just 11 games into the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing made five saves for her eighth shutout of the season. She is just four away from tying the LBC single-season record for shutouts in a season, which was set by Emily Lloyd in 2011.

LBC outshot Keuka, 29-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. During its two games this weekend, LBC outshot its opponents 72-15.

The Chargers have not allowed a goal since Penn St. Berks scored with 1.9 seconds remaining to steal a 2-1 victory on Sept. 23. That streak will be tested once again on Tuesday when LBC takes on Goucher in Baltimore, Md. at 4 p.m.

For now though, LBC can relax and enjoy its perfect weekend - even if it is too hot for October.
